SSTTEEEAMM

On the afternoon of February 10, 2024, we organized a conversation amongst artist, physicists, scholars and MFA students to discuss models for a cross disciplinary residency + research centre at Emily Carr University which we are provisionally called The STEAM Lab.

The Leaning Out of Windows research project taught us about the possibilities of art and science collaborations. We see the expansive potential for SSTTEEEAMM = Science (Sociology) Technology (Thinking) Engineering (Ecology, Embodiment) Arts Mathematics (Medicine)…

This proposed ECU research centre would serve to generate conversations and to make the conditions for interdisciplinary collaborations, create possibilities for something new and generative, i.e. new understandings to shift our work in unimaginable ways.

How do we tap into what we know? How might we challenge our assumptions?

Can we be in this for the long term instead of extraction-based research, allowing for an arc that happens over time, intergenerational learning.
